Greenhouse Gas Inventories

For businesses, non-profit community organizations, and local governments, tackling climate change requires a detailed picture of where greenhouse gas emissions are coming from.

An accurate greenhouse gas inventory is the first step in an effective Climate Action Plan, which is a roadmap to drive your emissions towards net zero.

RegenAll can help you inventory your organization’s emissions using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and other international standards. Your inventory will help you set clear climate goals, benchmark your emissions against peer organizations, and point you towards the most effective climate solutions.

For emissions you can’t address today, you can also reach net zero by supporting local carbon offset projects through our Community Climate Fund.

Why do you need a Greenhouse Gas Inventory?

An accurate inventory is the first step in an effective Climate Action Plan, which is a roadmap to drive your company’s greenhouse gas emissions towards “net zero.” Becoming a sustainable, net-zero business can help you attract customers, retain loyal employees, cut costs, and stay ahead of new regulations.

What is a Greenhouse Gas Inventory?

A greenhouse gas inventory is a thorough accounting of all of the climate-changing gases that your business emits during the course of annual operations. It includes carbon dioxide (CO2) released when fossil fuels are burned to run vehicles or produce electricity. Depending on the nature of your business, an inventory may also cover refrigerants used in air conditioning and cooling systems, methane produced from landfill waste, and carbon sequestration in natural areas managed by your business. These various greenhouse gas emissions are standardized into units of “CO2 equivalents” and allocated across the key facets of your business. For context, a typical U.S. household emits around 50 MT of CO2 eq per year.

Because nearly every facet of our economy generates greenhouse gases, an inventory needs a well-defined boundary or scope. International standards define Scope 1 inventories as the emissions produced directly by your business (for instance, heating oil burned at your office building). Scope 2 inventories include emissions produced to generate electricity used by your business. Scope 3 includes emissions “embedded” in your company’s supply chain (for instance, emissions that occur during the production and distribution of goods sold).
