Habitat for Humanity began in 1976. When it is asked who started this very successful nonprofit building program, someone always suggests President Jimmy Carter. Indeed, while President Carter and his wife Rosalynn helped immensely in the growth of Habitat, Millard Fuller was the inspiration behind the movement. One of the building blocks of Habitat is The Fund for Humanity, inviting people to share their wealth with folks to provide them with a home of their own — not as a handout but as a hand up.
