Understanding the role of a robust tree population in an ever-increasing stormy world.

The July storms that brought powerful wind and rain to the Lancaster area were remarkable, but not entirely surprising. The tree damage and power outages caused by the storm were unsettling, inconvenient, and expensive for both homeowners and our local public services. And yet, as climate-related conditions intensify, the role trees play in absorbing carbon dioxide, cooling temperatures, and absorbing extreme runoff becomes even more important.

Join the College Park Climate Action Neighborhood for a community discussion on the concerns, costs, programs, and tools to manage our tree canopy in a changing climate. Speakers include Mike Meyer, Urban Forester with the City of Lancaster; Emily Broich, PA Green Infrastructure Projects Coordinator with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay; and Jason Henning, Manager of Ecosystem Services and i-Tree Tools Lead with the Davey Institute.

Program Topics:

• Why urban trees are so important
• Recent storms and the impact on trees and residents
• City of Lancaster and Tree Tender tree programs
• The Street Tree Arboretum at Buchanan Park as a resource
• i-Tree Tools programs and apps
• Basic tree maintenance and preventative care for tree health and resiliency

This program is free, open to the public, and will be held rain or shine. Light refreshments will be provided.

The picnic pavilion is located in the middle of the park, above the playground and basketball courts if entering from Race Ave, and just past the dog park if entering from Buchanan Ave.

Parking is available on Race, College, and Buchanan Avenues.
